January 24, 2010
Eighteen runners "competed" in the 2010 January Cedar River Yours Truly 50K on a day which began with
a thin overcast and ended with chilly rain. Jess Mullen won both the women's and overall races with
a 50K time of 4:52:22, a new PR for her. Steve Walters, after completing the Pigtail's 50K
yesterday in 5:10 or so, came in second with a time of 4:58:17, winning the men's division.
Stephanie Day ran a fine race to finish third in 5:00:59. Mel Preedy edged out Monte Pascual to
capture the LPA title with a time of 7:51:19.
Pamela Wuest came in first in the 25K with a time of 2:25:45 though it could be argued that she also came in second to last. Mark Rose completed 23 miles in 3:37:05.
Several runners brought food - the heart-shaped Reese's peanut butter cups at the turnaround and the half-gallon of chocolate milk which enriched the hot chocolate at the finish were especially appreciated. Runners also enjoyed the Aussie Omega-3 cookies but the race director got most of the pumpkin bread. Thanks - it was very tasty too. As usual, the race director served hot vegetarian chili to everyone at the finish and it was very good. Thanks to Susan (wife of race director) for the chili, and Rachel Ray for the recipe.
The cold rain and wind would have made the last couple of hours at the finish area a bit tough to take were it not for Matt Hagen who backed up his Honda Element to the upwind side of the finish area tent, providing both shelter from the wind and a comfortable place to sit along with genial company for the race director (who is now in the market for a Honda Element of his own).
Overall, it was a good time. The race director particularly enjoyed visiting with runners during and after the race - the next best thing to actually running it. So thanks everyone who participated, and I look forward to seeing you again next year (if not sooner).
