Having wanted to climb Mount Shasta since I first got a good look at it 20 years ago, I left the boys (16 and 14) in the motel at about 4AM, started up the Avalanche Gulch route shortly before 5 and summited about five hours later. Perfect conditions, lots of company. The boys enjoyed their morning at the motel pool.

Looking back up the route from near the Bunny Flat trailhead. The route traverses diagonally up to the right and through the reddish notch, called the Red Bank.
